Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, whats going on?

My daughter is going into a speech/physical therapist on the 2nd to see whats going on. However in the mean time I'm curious to know what other people think about her symptoms.

My daughter is 4 years old.

she weighs 28lbs, but both her mother and father are really small so I'm not sure thata a "symptom"

She will not talk to any strangers or make eye contact with them, ever.

she will talk a little to extended family of familiar faces but rarely makes eye contact.

She will talk at home but her speach is slightly "strained", when she speaks it's never clear and always in a singsong/whiny tone...even if she's happy...it's weird and annoying at times...it rare that she ever just says something in a normal tone.

she flicks her fingers together while sucking her thumb ( she's always sucking her thumb)

she is clumbsy beyond belief

She has "issues" with just how tight or lose her shoes and carseat belt are. We have to ajust it for every trip based on the thickness of her clothes.

Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, whats going on?
It's good that you are taking her in for evals. This will help her get services through the school district. But if you want a diagnosis that will be accepted by schools, state, etc she needs to be evaluated by a developmental pediatrician or neurologist.

A few of her behaviors sound consistent with kids on the spectrum. Her lack of eye contact, poor social skills and sing songy voice. The finger flicking may be a stim. The thumb sucking could be a stim or oral sensory thing. Don't try to stop the flicking and sucking right now. If they are stims, then they serve a very real purpose for her. The seatbelt could be a sensory issue as well. Is she sensitive to tags, heavy seams and casings on clothing as well as texture?

Take a look at the website for the Autism Society of America (www.autism-society.org). It has some good basic info about autism. The OASIS website is great for Asperger's (www.aspersyndrome.org). If you want to do some of your own evals on her take a look at firstsigns.org. It has developmental milestones for up to 36 months. Although she is older than that, if she has delays it will give an idea of what her functioning levels are.

The massgeneral link goes to a table of common rating tools used and who would complete them. Quite a few include parents and have links to the questionnaires- some free, some for sale.

She is also old enough to be evaluated for services through your school district.

If she turn out to have some sort of PDD, you will have to become something of an expert in many areas. You will have to become her advocate. Don't leave everything to the "professionals",

Good luck.
Reply:Hi! My son (3 years old) is going to be evaluated soon for Autism. I am pretty sure he is somewhere on the spectrum.

His symptoms are : echolalia, poor eye contact, socialization issues, sensory (sounds mostly), high pain tolerance. His only stim is that he likes to "spin". I can't answer your question per say. But, just to share something I've noticed over the past few months...

I started him on the gfcf diet and have seen great improvements. His speech has soared. Better eye contact. Before he would just say words, things he heard on the television and they were usually out of context. He just seems to be more coherent after starting the diet. His bowel movements, which were very loose, have even improved. Which, proves to me that he may have the 'leaky gut syndrome'. He's always been that way. I read Karyn Seroussi's book on how she helped heal her son and I must admit I pick it up still and read sections over again. It is an amazing book. Lisa Lewis has a few books for the gfcf diet. Both are awesome. Anyhow, I hope this helps a little. Wishing you and your little one the best. :)

Mommy of Two :)
Reply:Its not aspergers, but it could be autism. However, because of the genetics involved with autism, its really unusual to have a younger child that is not affected - especially a male. That's assuming they have the same father.
Reply:I finally got my daughter to a neurologist who specializes in children and behavioral issues. She has Aspergers Syndrome. It totally explained all the symptoms she was having and I got one diagnosis for it all instead of someone saying she was this and that. Check out books from a leading reasearcher named Tony Attwood. He did a seminar not to long ago and I totally had an eye opening experience about how wonderful my daughter is and how much she needs me to understand her world. They really struggle to fit into our little box and can get overloaded and meltdown so easily because we don't understand. Contact your pediatrician and ask for a specialist for Neurology for children. Also, go to this website for more information:

www.autismspeaks.org
Reply:It sounds like your daughter has apraxia or problems with motor functions of the mouth and its affecting her speech. The sing song voice and strained voice are symptoms of this. My autistic son has the same problem with speech. Prompt therapy for speech is great to teach the kids how to control the muscles of the jaw and tongue to produce correct sounds. This is really helping my son. Does your daughter overextend or underextend her mouth when she tries to talk or strains her mouth ( looks like a smile).

You need to take her to be evaluated by an occupational therapist for gross and fine motor control. The problem she has with the carseat belt are related to the amount of pressure. She is seeking a comfort zone to deal with all the sensations around her. Your daughter is listening to you but you don't realize it because she is trying to deal with her surroundings. She is suffering from low muscle tone.

Many ASD kids have problems with digestion of foods. I suggest giving her digestive enzymes for all foods, fats, gluten etc. I also would note the odor and color of her urine and stool and tell the pediatrician. Yellowish stool is not a good sign and smelly urine or stool indicates an infection. Check for yeast, bad bacteria, and parasites. This could be affecting her weight.

My son does not see family often because of distance and he has to get used to them all over again. The eye contact can improve with the addition of cod liver oil. The vitamin A in the cod liver oil helps them with visual processing. Vitamin A in the rods of the eyes could be low. Our dr. saw "unequal reactivity" in our son's eyes== related to eye contact. The cod liver oil restored the eye contact in my son, everytime he is getting low on vitamin A , he starts to lose eye contact. When your daughter looks sideways- she is attempting to focus the light into the eyes, so she looks like she is not making eye contact.

My autistic son is now 5 and he making great progress in speech and fine/gross motor control. My son's school is giving lectures on behavior, fine/gross motor skills, etc. You might want to see if someone is offerring free classes.

Good luck.
Reply:If you get a chance to watch the NOVA episode on epigentics, you will see there is a definite link to mental disorders and nurturing in infancy. It turns out that genes can be turned on and off by epigenes which develop from lack of nurturing by the mothers in young mice. You have to watch the show though. These inflammatory discoveries have coyly avoided appearance on the PBS website for some reason.

However, if you want to get your toes wet, here is the intro:

Reply:hey there:

I'm sorry to hear about your trouble with your daughter. It's always hard when there is something that cannot be figured out with one's child/ loved one.

I did some research on it and found a really good forum that is specific to both autism and asperger's syndrome. there are alot of people on the sites that have personal experience as well as doctor's that answer questions. There is alot of good information on treatments, symptoms, and clinics you go for help.

Autism Site:

Asperger's Site:

good luck! I wish you the best.

Reply:Okay, for one Asperger's Syndrome is an Autistic disorder, I know because I have it. I did in fact learn to reasd pretty quickly, but my socialization skills are very poor as are my speaking skills. I have a hard time with hand eye coordination, and I hate anything that constrains my arms or wrists, it took me forever to even bear having a watch on, and I still can't wear rings. I do however like my shoes either tight or extremely loose, I never used to tie them because I liked them loose, but I do like my socks to be tight around my ankles. I have horrible handwriting, and when I'm excited or nervous my hands shake a lot and so do my legs. I have obsessions with certain things like always having certain things with me everywhere I go, I love to look at art and other visual stimulants. But I have a terrible hatred of physical stimulants, it just bothers me. If you want any further info you can visit the site I am providing.
Reply:There are some very good answers here already, but I will add my two cents worth. My son is labeled as having Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). It's an autism spectrum disorder, and my younger son has no unusual characteristics.

Based on your description, it does sound like your daughter may be autistic. It affects more males than females, but it does affect females.

Early intervention is key. My son started receiving intervention when he was 13 months old. He's made a lot of progress, but he has other issues.

But it's not too late. Do have her evaluated, and do read the sites others have recommended. Also, once she has a diagnosis, she should qualify for some special school programming, depending on your public school district.

Music therapy can be very effective in treating autism. I myself am a music therapist, and have some information and links on my site, http://soundmindsoulutions.bravehost.com... Find out if your school district has a music therapist on staff. You can also request a list of music therapists from http://www.musictherapy.org/.

As a parent of a child with a disability, I am always willing to talk to other parents. It can be a real struggle, I know! Please let me know if you'd like to talk or share information!

Take care!
Reply:Autism is characterized by extreme withdrawl and an abnormal absorption in fantasy, accompanied by delusion, hallucination and inability to communicate verbally or otherwise relate to people. Asperger's syndrome is similar to an autistic disorder but lacking the delays in development of language, cognitive function and self-help skills. You don't say how well she functions, plays or interacts with immediate family or other children. Have you had her hearing assessed? Does she respond to your voice when she is not facing you? The carseat/shoes "issues" leads me to believe she may be mildly autistic. Autistic children don't do well with external stimulus, pains or constraints. I hope all goes well with your daughter.

Are you always looking...?

for familiar faces, or would you rather move on and find new ones to hang around with?

What song is this, and who sings it?

I only have the lyrics:

'I remember the familiar faces.

Empty spaces. Empty spaces.

I remember .... sorrow.

No tomorrow. No tomorrow.'

What song is this, and who sings it?
It is by Tears for Fears, and has been covered by many people; the most popular being from Gary Jules.

All around me are familiar faces

Worn out places - worn out faces

Bright and early for their daily races

Going nowhere - going nowhere

And their tears are filling up their glasses

No expression - no expression

Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow

No tommorow - no tommorow

And I find it kind of funny

I find it kind of sad

The dreams in which I'm dying

Are the best I've ever had

I find it hard to tell you

'Cos I find it hard to take

When people run in circles

It's a very, very Mad World

Children waiting for the day they feel good

Happy Birthday - Happy Birthday

Made to feel the way that every child should

Sit and listen - sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous

No one knew me - no one knew me

Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson

Look right through me - look right through me

Charles lamb poetry?
He had learned much from the free expressions of the old dramatic poets, and in such pieces as "The Old Familiar Faces"--a poignant cry from a suffering soul--or in his

unconventional sonnet, "The Gipsy's Malison," written more than thirty years later, we have some of the most markedly individual of his poems. He was not a poet, he declared--running counter to the judgement of some of his later critics--but essentially a prosaic writer. All that he wrote in verse, apart from the plays, would come within the compass of a small volume, and perhaps half of that would be occupied with album verses, slight _vers d'occasion_, such as are more often the products of prose-writers' leisure than of a poet who sings because he must. He felt his way to prose through poetry as so many lesser writers have done, and on the way uttered perhaps a dozen pieces, which for one reason or another will ever make a lasting appeal to readers. The sense of tragedy in "The Old Familiar Faces"--more remarkable in that it was tragedy realized and expressed at the age of three-and-twenty--the weird imagination of "The Gipsy's Malison," the sweet portraiture of "Hester," the fancy of "A Farewell to Tobacco," and the "Ode to the Treadmill," will ensure that portion of his work to which they belong, sharing the immortality of the essays of Elia.

Is it freaky if you never chat to anyone at the gym?

Please tell me I'm not alone in this.

I'm at the gym 5 days a week, see lots of familiar faces, yet I never chat with anyone there. Am I a freak?

Is it freaky if you never chat to anyone at the gym?
Not at all. I never talk to anyone when I work out.

The people at the gym I attend are there for keeps, for the sole purpose of making their bodies look and feel the way they want. Most of the men and women there are concentrating on their workout routine. Idle chit-chat wastes time, and breaks any rhythm you might build up working out.
Reply:I'm trying to lose weight too and it's sooo hard. My aunt is using a weight loss product and it's really working for her. I'm gonna try it and I recommend you try it too. Check their website at

http://www.myl2you.info , my aunt got a free trial and paid only 6.99$ shipping and handling.
Reply:No, you are not a freak.

The majority of people just listen to their mp3 player and mind their own business.

Although I will occasionally nod my head at people..that's about it.
Reply:Relax my friend! It's not freaky, it's just not your style!!! Probably, you are not one of the most social persons in the world but still, it is SO SOON! Or maybe, you don't even care to chat, you are just concentrated in working-out. By my own experience, i'm telling you though that as time goes by you'll get kind of boed. Chating for a while, let's say with a nice -looking person ;) will make your time at the gym quite more pleasant!!!
Reply:Nah. I wouldn't either. For one, I bet it's too noisy for people to hear me clearly without me straining my voice. Secondly, I don't like chatting when I'm out of breath.
Reply:It doesn't make you a "freak" (thats harsh), but I can't imagine not talking to people in the weight room. It makes busting your a$$ alot easier.
Reply:i would feel a tiny bit akward if i saw the same face day after day and didn't say anything, however....why do you have to be the first to talk? they aren't talking either, so you can think of it as their fault.

i dont talk at gym either, just not my type of socializing place.
Reply:no way...when you're at the gym you should be there for one reason...the gym is not a social club nor is a place for "boy meets girl"...keep it up, you are definately not alone.

I had a dream I was at a party

alone I wondered through the crowd

The smoke was thick, the music too loud

I looked for some familiar faces

but all I saw was ghosts and witches

monsters and zombies with fake stitches

frightened I dropped my glass of cider..

the music stopped and they all turned to stare

I stood there frozen , with bean dip in my hair

They started to circle around me moaning and growling

I ran out through the door and down the street

but they kept up no matter how fast my feet

I screamed for help as loud as I dare

but the noise was swallowed by the cold dense air

I tried so hard to open my eyes

to wake from the land within my fears

so real I could feel the warmth from my tears

I called out again into the darkness

no one replied to my fear stricken pleas

off in the distace all I heard was the clang of keys

Though I was terrified I followed the sounds

hoping soon I'd be lead out of the woods to my town

not knowing if I was headed to safety or a

Brain wave?

Experience in our daily life affects our mental state. When we are surrounded by stranger we get anxious and when we are around familiar faces we are happy. There are many different mental states and they change and disappear quickly as they come. Why does our mental state fluctuate almost randomly? I know external things play certain factor, but I have a wild idea that just came to my mind. I am a physic junky and it came to me maybe this external object send a wave associated with the mood that interference with our mental state (wave). My idea is that this wave bumps each other out canceling or interfering with each other creating certain emotion. Since a wave can have strong frequency certain feeling like anger, love, and hater maybe associated with strong wave frequency that might be the reason why we still hold the feeling even though we don’t want it. .

Brain wave?
You are not exactly right. Some people get anxious around familiar faces as well as strangers.

interesting....however, i don't believe that objects can give off waves that interfere with our brain functioning and emotions...our brains don't actually give off waves, they are measured in wave frequency.....hmmmm you got me thinking though...cool thoughts.

"Dems Are No-Shows at DLC

By Nikki Schwab

Posted 7/30/07

As moderate Democrats assembled over a long weekend at the Democratic Leadership Council's "National Conversation" in Nashville, eight familiar faces were missing—those of all of the party's presidential contenders. "

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articl...

*******************

NONE of those people can lead so why is it news that none of them bothered to show-up?

Why is this even a news item?
Actually found it a small bit interesting, that group is the "moderate" Democrats, the same type that Hilliary and the rest of coven keep trying to say they are. But instead they all will be attending the KOS liberal left wing-nut convention. Should be interesting to see whom ever comes up with the nomination will distance themselves after the fact from the far left and ask for the help of that convention they skip when they go to seek the independent and moderate republican voters.
Reply:they were too busy laughing at Fred Thompson trying to raise money
Reply:Gee, could it be they had prior speaking engagements elsewhere?

Why did you even bother to post your "question?"
Reply:Seriously. Who cares about Nashville. It is a gop hick state anyway. Why would the next President waste their time in Nashville when the states none worthwhile electoral votes will only go republican anyway?

exactly--why waste your time when california, new york, and other big states are more important. Texas might even vote dem this time around (probably not).
Reply:The DLC is dead, the party has shifted to the left.
Reply:Why is it necessary for presidential candidates to appear at EVERY event their party holds? Perhaps they had scheduled something else. Maybe the party controllers didn't want them there. Any number of reasons. Perhaps you could ask THEM and I'll just bet they'll be able to explain it to you.

Why does the military release 'false info' about military deaths in Iraq?

Tillman and Lynch are familiar faces with how the military lied about their deaths.

This soldier was said to have commited suicide by hanging - while his hands were handcuffed behind his back!!

They have since back-pedaled on that and are investigating.

'The Army originally said his death was a suicide, “but the way they found him, his hands were cuffed behind his back, that's not suicide. To me, it's not,” Howell said.'

My question is, why did they tell the soldier's mom her son committed suicide before they investiated thoroughly?

http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/top_t...

Why does the military release 'false info' about military deaths in Iraq?
The same reason ALL bureaucracies put on their 'best face' when they appear before the public. All news from bureaucracies, good and bad, has the best light shone on it so that the bureaucrats in charge can ensure that their careers aren't derailed by one thing or another. And, yes, I'm including lying when I say they shine the best light on their results.

The PURPOSE of bureaucrats is to first, retain their positions and second, to increase the size of their budgets and bureaucracies.

I realize this may sound cynical but I've been watching how the game is played all over the world since the late '50s and that IS how it is played. Not always, of course, but most of the time (and waaaayyyyyy too often at that, I might add!).
Reply:Disinformation is common in the DoD. The last thing any commander wants to do is create political backlash over an incident or lower morale amongst troops, so control and diversion of incidents is performed. There is also a bit of CYA.
Reply:Maybe the guy releasing it is distracted by your pic. By the way, Lynch didn't die.
Reply:The same reasons most people lie. That's right those in the military are people too. If you thinks its some huge conspiracy stop and think about the people you know. I'm sure you know people that lie or sweep facts under the rug. Maybe you lie once in a while yourself. Most people don't lie out of spite or hatred but embarrassment or ignorance then there are white lies. In the military these easily snowball. Does this exonerate them? No. People are expected to tell the truth and for the most part they do. But when a "truth" gets proven to be a lie it doesn't mean that its a well planned intricate conspiracy.
Reply:More important than truth (to some people) is the attempt to maintain the illusion of never being wrong.
Reply:the military lies in every conflict.they lied thru the entire cold war as to how strong the soviets were.the job of the leadership is to make the public think everything is going great.they will say anything to keep public support as high as possible.
Reply:It seems to me that all of our government organizations are now being run by fear, for fear and of fear. They were afraid to admit that there was something out of place or have their honor diminished. Hence, the overglorified and hyped up story of Lynch and Tillman. Too afraid to be wrong. This is not good in my humble opinion, as it prevents honest recognition and analysis of areas that need improvement.
Reply:For edification, one can commit suicide by hang with your hand hand cuffed behind your back.

What do I do w/ this situation?

I've been mildly to significantly depressed for awhile. At worst, I've felt so numb, a walking ghost w/ no recollection of even ppl in my classes who would walk by %26amp; say hi to me. It was as if I felt

so lonely

I didn't even bother to look for familiar faces in the croud 'cause I just gave up on the notion of friendships.

This was a result, greatly, of a huge fight I had with my "best friends." I made up with all of them but it's not the same; some of them are already off in med. school (they are in a 7 yr program) but I'm still a jr in college, my grades are suffering (in fact, I may fail a class b/c my prof. is known for impossible exams-she prides herself in perpetuating this reputation).

My family life: my brother is still struggling in med. school and has failed so many yrs, he's been attempting this for too long. I see a lot of his mistakes in my life-will I end up like him?

These thoughts make me guilty/sad.

Don't wanna take meds. Vry lonely-never had a b/f...

What do I do w/ this situation?
You gotta pick yourself up and keep going on. Make some new friends. I know it'll be hard to try but you gotta make it happen for yourself. If you want to keep going to school then keep trying, don't think about the "best friends" who let you down. Follow your heart, do what you gotta do. Most importantly, believe in yourself and TRY. Those people who say hi to you, make an attempt at a conversation. Make new friends, take your mind off your previous frienship problems and just keep living.
Reply:Stop worrying so much. You have already accomplished a lot.
Reply:OK this is going to sound stupid but i promise it will work... first take st johns wart i sware by it .. it doesn't make you feel drug ed out just happier.... next go to the pound and get a dog commit to walk your dog every day for an hour (its just a hour)

this dog will love you so much, simple daily exercise like walking the dog ,release endorphins that make depression go away

and having a dog will help you meet new people (perhaps a new man) and don't stress out about school so much it will all fall into place
Reply:Every school has counselors. Talk with your advisor and find out where you can receive the help you need.

You never really have to go this alone. Ask for help, and then do what you need to do to get your life back on track.

You can do this - and you're worth the effort!
Reply:wow. you need to find a hobby. make some new friends. focus on school. pick better classes next semester. do you want to go to med school? you need to do whats best for you. as for the depression **** prozac get some weed and stop worrying so much! that could be half your problem there. oh and the boyfriend thing like i said you should try to meet new people. it sucks to lose friends over time but thats what friends do, they come in and out of your life.
Reply:take a deep breath...and stop feeling sorry for yourself. life is good...if you want it to be.

Weird dream? What does it mean?

I am a straight 16 year old guy who finds every aspect of girls appealing. However, the dream i had worried me. Last night I had a dream that i was at a party. There were alot of familiar faces. One of my close guy friends and i were sitting down and talking. He unbuckled my pants and started to jerk me off. I thought it was a wet dream because it felt real ,but when i woke up i realized it wasnt. What does this mean? I'm into girls but i can admit to people if a guy is okay looking. Is that normal? Why didnt i stop him in my dream?

Weird dream? What does it mean?
eh.... maybe u were thinking about being gay before you fell asleep and you had a dream about it. most dreams fall into something your thinking about before you fall asleep. Anywayz if u are truly sure that your not gay, go to a gay porn site n watch a vid. if you get an erection you have a problem. if you dont, ur straight =D

but no im serious. a straight guy should be completely grossed out by a guy on guy vid. give it a try.
Reply:No thats not normal, that means your bi........ Or really want your friend thats a dyke and looks like a guy.... sorry man u may just be bi or gay......... ...................... ..............................
Reply:this means that u like girls but u will try different things at your age im 13 i think of girls in my dreams u gaybird lol
Reply:you may be thinking about doing something that you feel isnt right or you may have done something against rules that are set up around you in your real waking life. it's just a warning dream to stay within boundaries that will keep you out of trouble or harms way.
Reply:You didn't stop him because it felt good.lol.Not all dreams mean something.Sometimes it happens with everybody.
Reply:It's 100% normal. It doesn't mean anything unless you get hard in the waking world by looking at guys or think of them while masturbating. My guess is it just means you are very comfortable with your friend and like him a lot - as a friend. Could also mean you think he likes guys but you'd know that in real life, so probably not. The brain uses the real world to come up with dreams, so it probably took two things and smashed them together-- wanting to jerk off and wanting someone to do it for you, the someone just happened to be your guy friend. Relax. Enjoy your dreams.
Reply:You are just a too natural person.
Reply:Your human. We all have weird dreams.

The reason for your dream could have been something such as you talking to your friend right before bed, and last week you talked to this friend about some gay guy, and your conscious took that and made a really, really sick dream. But like I said your normally. You could have just as easily had a convo about marshmellows with this guy last wk then talked to him before going to bed then you could have had a dream about eating marshmellows with him. It's normal. Things happen. You can't control what your brain takes from your daytime activities, and convos, and turns them into

So don't worry, your normal

Should I say hi to everyone I know?

Such as classmates, I just wave and go hi to everyone I know from class. I see a lot of familiar faces while waking around campus. Theres this one guys whose really cool, he says hi to everyone he knows from class, he doesn't know me well but he shakes my hand every time. I wonder if it will make people more interested or creepy.

I got this pride that many men have, you don't wanna say hi sometimes because you may seem weak. Its a learned behavior form high school but I think I should change that now. What of you greeting others experience?

Should I say hi to everyone I know?
i great everyone i talk to from class. if i dont really talk to them, i dont wave, but i do talk to most people. i am pretty sociable, and i wave to most people. i dont think it creeps them out, if someone waves to me thats in one of my classes, i see it as gratitude, i know they know i exist. i think it is rude when you are walking about, and see someone and they dont make eye contact with you
Reply:Kind of strange.

How about, you just smile at everyone you know and acknowledge them.

You don't have to say hi unless you're planning on talking to them/walking with them or haven't seen them in a bit.
Reply:Of Course! It doesn't matter whether others will think its "cool" or not. It's a nice concept and there is never anything wrong with being friendly.
Reply:be yourself.....
Reply:you could wink and slap their ***
Reply:What I have learned is that no one is less or better than you, Really just say hello to EVERYONE "popular" or "not". Its college-- so just say hello and have fun-- you meet lots of people when you see that you'll make tons of friends this way :)

Choice of living in a retirement village when ageing.?

I am a very active female, married and still working. My question relates to older people (other than me but also for me when I am much older). When my father died my mother went into a retirement resort mainly because my sisters thought it best for her to get settled somewhere before she reached to urgent stage (e.g. health deteriorated). As a trained nurse I was trained to think differently - there are all the resources in the community that one needs to stay in you rown home as long as possible and this should be encouraged. As it was my mother's memory went very quickly from the shock of being on her own in a unit, out of her usual environment (so she lost confidence in driving the car and lost her independence, familiar faces and activities). (She was 87yrs and lived a VERY active life previously, including playing golf twice a week, did the family business wages, met with friends etc. ). She went from bad to worse. What is your opinion?

Choice of living in a retirement village when ageing.?
My grandmother died at the age of 85 and she refused to die in a retirement center. She died where she raised 6 kids, and had a husband for 50 years of her marriage. She may have not remembered as much in her later years due to dymencia, but she belonged in her own house with her family. I think a retirement home is when you dump it on someone else's porch. I would never do that to my mother, or myself.
Reply:I think you already know the answer to your question. I think you knew it before you placed your mom in the "retirement resort". I think you were out-voted and I am sorry for that. Please do not be bitter toward your sisters; they didn't know any better. You knew because of your experience as a nurse and they didn't have that education to help them make an informed decision.

There is nothing you can do about it now. I am afraid that if you were to bring her back home at this point, she would regress even further. I think you know what the best choice for her is and I think you should voice your opposition a little louder and put your foot down this time.

Have you asked your mom how she feels about the options?
Reply:My mother went into one at a much earlier stage. She is fit and healthy. She immerses herself in the activities and enjoys her life. She's 68, by the way. There will be no shock for her if she becomes ill. She does have a heart condition, so this is probably would made her realise she would need care. She loves her life.

My parents-in-law decided to go into a retirement village. At the last moment, though, my father in law would pull out, saying he couldn't face it. It was a nightmare, especially when my formerly fit mother-in-law fell ill with cancer and in effect, left him after 65 years of marriage to move into the retirement vilage on her own, as she needed surgery and treatment. My fil refused to go, saying he would cut his throat rather than move. My father-in-law starved to death, in his own home. He was stubborn and refused help. My poor mil had to live with the guilt - no wonder she died less than a year after he did.

Her life was made a misery because she was struggling to maintain her high standards of cleanliness, while my fil sat on his bum. She waited on him hand and foot. He had a heart condition.

So if you had to ask my mil and my mother, both would say the same thing. Move in, long before you have to. My fil would say "no".
Reply:suggestion: the retirement house shoild be near a scenic

gulf course
Reply:Western society has little if any respect for their eldest. In many other cultures the advancment of age is highly respected...and these cultures dont COPOUT when it comes to caring for their elders. Not so in the western quick fix, me before you mental ideology of modern America!! Like you said...people are trained to think the way they do...do it long enuff...and the brainwash becomes unquestionable as well as inconvenient. And being 'inconvenient' could pose a 'national security risk' in the minds of the public! 8o)
Reply:OK one of the evil statistics out there is that roughly half of the elderly that are put in homes are dead within 6 months of being put there for various reasons. The most prominant seems to be the lack of a will to live.

Multiple studies have shown that if a person is involved in their community, if they are leading an active life, they will live many times longer than someone in a insular community. I would get your mother out of a 'retirement community' (and never allow yourself to be put in one) never surrender your home.

I would make her/you a part of your/your childrens daily life and routine, a member of the core family. I would give her/you a reason to live %26amp; remember beyond "tuesday is community bingo and six months from now Tommy will send me a card...."

I can tell you that the elders in my family that were cared for by family in the family home, lived more than a decade longer than those that were not.
Reply:I'm in my 20s and if I make it to retirement and even old age, I most certainly expect to be living in a retirement community. Since I won't be having children, I'll be saving up plenty of money, so I'm not stuck in a hole. It would cool to hang out with a bunch of old geezers when I'm old!

I think it's different than when someone is expecting something different. Like your mother and my parents and many generations expect and some even had children simply so they'd be around to take care of them when they're old! When you're expecting to be taken care of but then you're put into a home, it's probably very frightening and maybe even painful.

Our society doesn't allow for people to take care of their parents like it used to. It's not that people are selfish and lack respect. Traditionally, women were trapped in the home with the kids and the grandparents and a single income was okay, these days? Most certainly not possible for most of us and even fewer want it. As the older generations die off, I think that sort of shock of being in a retirement/nursing home to die off with it.

Mad World Lyrics

All around me are familiar faces

Worn out places, worn out faces

Bright and early for their daily races

Going nowhere, going nowhere

Their tears are filling up their glasses

No expression, no expression

Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow

No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny

I find it kinda sad

The dreams in which I'm dying

Are the best I've ever had

I find it hard to tell you

I find it hard to take

When people run in circles

It's a very, very mad world mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good

Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday

Made to feel the way that every child should

Sit and listen, sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous

No one knew me, no one knew me

Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson

Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kinda funny

I find it kinda sad

The dreams in which I'm dying

Are the best I've ever had

I find it hard to tell you

I find it hard to take

When people run in circles

It's a very, very mad world ... world

Enlarge your world

Mad world

How do you get over a figure-like boyfriend?

this guy liked me as i liked him back. it's so obvious when we make eye contact. the situation is... he wanted to show compassion and cuddle with me when no one is really around (like at my house). once we got around familiar faces and friends, he wants to show no interest in me. it's been about a month since we almost kissed in my home theatre and i still think my days away about him. we sorta talk but not really. ooh, plus there are some other moments where we sorta were "friends with benifits".

i don't want to keep thinking about him. we are complete opposites!! for example, he is a skateboarder and i'm more of an athlete. there are lots more details not for me to get in.

please give me advice. i'm embaressed to say that i'm a bit desperate. also to add, we are a bit young so me being a bit immature may have something to do with this all.

How do you get over a figure-like boyfriend?
Let ig go. You said nothing positive about this relationship you and he have. Sounds like you are wasting time wondering what he's thinking and what he wants. Either be upfront and ask him the truth or move on. Start the new year right. '-)
Reply:okay baby cakes. you are smart and have wisdom and common sense. kick this jackasss to the curb. WHENEVER a man acts distant around his friends THAT'S A NO NO! you are young because a person my age (42) wouldn't have to ask yahoo. He would be dissed and dismissed. (smile) if you need to vent email me direct. don't do anything to disrespect yourself okay.
Reply:ive sorta had a situation like this, but yours sounds like you need to dump him, if hes not proud enough of you to let people know that your his girlfriend in public, then hes not worth it
Reply:forget him. if he can't act the same in public as in private, then he's not really interested and i don't get this friends with benefits thing. I call that boyfriend/girlfriend. it just sounds like an excuse for a guy to make-out with a girl then dump her.
Reply:get another bf
Reply:Well, when your in public (with friends or family)stress the you love him and kiss him on the cheek alot, and when your alone have nothing to do with him at all.Soon he may break-up with you,

at that time act so happy%26amp;exited.
Reply:you guys are just young move on it will get better day by day
Reply:just face up to him tell him look just because you freinds are around dosint mean you can disrespect me

Who wants to HELP DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER?

Duane “Dog” Chapman’s life and the life of son Leland %26amp; brother Tim hang in the balance over a minor misdemeanor – the capture of Andrew Luster in Mexico – notorious rapist now serving 124 year sentence in prison. (Luster was convicted on 86 counts of brutal rape).

While in custody in a US federal detention facility, their lives were threatened by familiar faces and other inmates seeking revenge for his bounty hunting profession. The Mexican prison’s conditions would be worse and they would most likely not live to serve the 4 month to 4 year sentence that misdemeanor carries.

THIS WOULD BE A DEATH SENTANCE. HELP DOG!

So will ya'll help?

Who wants to HELP DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER?
yes!!!i will and i will send this address to everyone that i know and get them to as well and so on!!!!!these people are good people and i cant believe what is happening!!!i was shocked to hear such a thing....what is this world coming to when they can punish people for doing the good things that these men do?!

wow i had to add more to my answer!!!what is wrong with these sick people on here.....this man that they caught raped women...i think that you would have a different view if one of those women were your mother or sister or daughter!!and dont say you wouldnt cause then you would be a liar!!wow people like you are why there are sooo many crimes and people getting away with them...you think that if they can make it to the border and hide then they should get away with what they did?!?dog, leland and tim did not do this because they are on a show..they did it cause they have a heart and no one else would!!because of them the women that this man raped can now sleep at night and go out in public without looking over their shoulders and worrying if that man would come back..shame on you people for not thinking that is a good thing!!!
Reply:Sorry, but any self proclaimed Born Again Bounty Hunter who hunts down people who did not show up for their scheduled court appearance date ALL THE WHILE BEING GUILTY of the same thing himself, is a real life dog. Report It

Reply:I think he has been punished enough. He just needs to be told to find the person and get the athourities involved. I think his passion got ahead of him when he found out Luster was in the club hunting women. He had date rape drugs and all kinds of stuff in his home when he was caught yet again.
Reply:He should stick to following the law and he wont get in trouble. At least that ridiculous show will be off the air, thank the mythological, fictitious god.
Reply:Sara feel free to quote me (that was sweet of you to mention it by the way). Thank You for keeping this infront of the people.

You're right, it would be a death sentence for those men. Shouldn't their own government protect their right to life?

I have to believe that the United States government would be there for its people. Bounty hunting is not a crime in the United States, which is grounds to not to return them.

I pray the Justice Department does the right thing.

I will follow those links tommorrow and ask government officials to intercede on the Chapmans' behalf.

Blessings!
Reply:He should have known that Bounty Hunting was illegal in Mexico. Do the crime, do the time. This is his chance to really be tough.

Next time he should remember he is not above the law.
Reply:No. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Just because he has a t.v. show, does he think he can get away with being above the law?
Reply:no, he broke the law there, he needs to comply with what he represents, The capture of criminals.

he is a criminal in Mexico, we shouldn't have a double standard simply b/c he's American.

He knew he was doing something illegal, if he really wanted to capture the rapist and not just promote his show, he would have done the capturing in a different way.

His Ego put him in his current position.

Where's everyone disappeared to?

Tell me what you think of this?

this one girl had a huge argument with this guy at the beach (she didnt know him, and she was alone)

they hated each others guts after 3 minutes, half an hour after the argument she got a phone call saying her mum had died ... she started crying really badly ... lots of people tried to comfort her but she pushed them all away in anger ... but when that guy she had an argument with asked what was wrong she immediatly hugged him and explained her mum had just died

is this really how the human mind works?

in our times of need we only ever really open up to familiar faces .. people we know one way or the other enemy or friend

Tell me what you think of this?
He wasn't that familiar. She had only known him for half an hour.
Reply:Your last statement is a true observation, however, your example in the begining was a pretty poor way of supporting it.
Reply:I think there must be more to the story... what was the initial argument about???... if you don't know someone it is unlikely you would have such a huge argument with them within seconds of meeting. Most people would just disregard the other person's view as unimportant to them and not worth an argument... so the fact they had the argument implies some kind of emotional connection... in which case, perhaps the girl felt a sort of connection with this guy that she wouldn't to any other strangers nearby... At least if she had just argued with this guy she knows he is likely to be honest with her whereas any of the other strangers' sympathy might seem too false and untrustworthy.

And if she was alone then I guess he is the most familiar face in the area at the time and so maybe the "safest" person to open up to in the area.
Reply:Well, yea people open up to people that they know, but this wouldn't be that case because she didn't know him and they weren't friends. They weren't anything.

I love going to Boca Chica, Dominican Republic. Is there any point in me vacationing elsewhere?

The thing is, there are so many positives to going to Boca Chica. Tons of women to hang out with because I'm single. It is only a 3.5 hour flight for me direct, and the flights are very inexpensive. Everything is walking distance from my hotel. The hotel is cheap and clean. It's fun going back and seeing familiar faces.

If I go somewhere else, it's just a gamble. Then I have to deal with many hours on a plane and finding out all the best places in the new area. However, a part of me feels I am limiting myself by going to the same place every time. what should I do?

I love going to Boca Chica, Dominican Republic. Is there any point in me vacationing elsewhere?
Go ahead and limit yourself. Hundreds of thousands of people out there experiment with different destinations in an attempt to find the ideal place to vacation. There are so many horrible experiences to be had during the process of actually finding a good, enjoyable vacation that it's not worth skipping around if you don't have to. Once you find your favorite place to relax, don't bother with anything else!
Reply:I just recently visited the Dominican Republic for the first time and absolutely LOVED IT!!!! But I have to tell you that I have been many places that I loved too. All for different reasons. There is this island in the Bahamas called Exuma. It is beautiful there too. All over Europe; London, Paris, Rome, Venice, Amsterdam all beautiful places.

The best part about traveling is going out and exploring and seeing new cultures and how other people live. Seeing things that you've never seen before. Broaden your horizons! You can still keep Boca Chica as your fave and visit there. But you really shouldn't limit yourself. You would just be selling yourself short on all the other wonderful places in the world.

Is this scenario funny??

imagine for a minute after all of God's children are in heaven and we're all seeing the familiar faces of friends and family members. We're all in our little groups asking them "hey, how you get here??" some say i got shot, some say car accident, others were slaughtered for preaching the gospel, some died of cancer, aids, just really painful deaths right, and then out of nowhere the prophet Elijah listening in on the conversation comes in trying to relate but he can't because he never experienced death. Everyone looks at him funny cause he had "the old charriot pick-up"

This is not really a question, just sharing some thoughts people lighten up.

Is this scenario funny??
and this one time at band camp,,,,,
Reply:Elijah wasn't carried off to heaven. He was being taken to his next assignment from god. But I see the humor, yes
Reply:whatever
Reply:that is an interesting scene...and i have always wondered about the prophet Elijah...he is the only human who never died...i wonder what he thinks??
Reply:In the afterlife those thoughts will not be present. It will be very different, and all of us will be busy praising the LORD.
Reply:You'd have to run it by TBS to be sure, but I'm going with very mildly funny. It's okay to laugh, but don't overdo it. ;o)
Reply:I don't get it.
Reply:They will all probably say the same thing(get him!)
Reply:no, it's not funny...i didn't laugh
Reply:Still not funny!!
Reply:What's the frequency, Kenneth?

What is it if you experience these symptoms?:?

Mood swings, become really upset, and really angry... Strong resentment of new friend brought into your gang because he's with [as in going out with] one of your good friends... even though I don't like her in that way... Talking to self a lot, answering self a lot, unaware of how to fix problems, even though i always know how to fix them... A bit anxious in social situations lately, itching of skin, small fear of seeing unwanted familiar faces, obsession with most of above? Ugh... Someone Help me!!! :-(

What is it if you experience these symptoms?:?
Firsty, do not panic. This is the first thing that you can find yourself doing right? Don't. I know its not easy but take deep breaths and KNOW to yourself you are going to be OK.

If you are really worried about yourself, pluck up courage to see your GP. Don't read a medical dictionary - you will diagnose yourself with something like schizophrenia when you actually have nothing of the kind.

And, by the way, how wrong you can be - you are not out of the usual teenage hormones yet - you are just getting started. For males, hormonal development does not even start to finish until you are at least 18 or 19.

Talking to yourself? -- Its interesting to know that this is one of the most common things people do. It can be worrying, but laugh with yourself - if it helps you overcome problems and sort out issues, who cares? I talk to myself all the time... sometimes without knowing I'm doing it! :D

As for mood swings - well, maybe that's just you. Are you a highly-strung person naturally? Many people chop and change like the wind, its just the way you are maybe?

Itching of skin - this is all tied up with your anxiety and again is a common reaction to nervousness and slight depression. Keep an eye on this as you don't want it to develop. Learn to relax and get a hobby - take your mind off of things for a bit and do something that stimulates your brain postively. Dwelling on things is hard not to do, I know this for a fact, but, in the long run, the ability to simply let go will serve you well in the future.

Stay away from searching for your "symptoms" on the Internet - do not do this. It makes you read into things that actually aren't there, think you have something you really don't have and believe some people's crap fictional stories about their 'depression'. I know you can sometimes get urges to look things up, but, don't - there is nothing there to find out that is not generally hyped-up crap.
Reply:Might be anxiety and/or depression which can be helped. If you are using any drugs symptoms can be heightened if you are already prone to them, I don't know how old you are but you could talk to your doctor, school counselor, pastor - and get help.

Good luck.
Reply:YOU HAVENT OUT GROWN THE TEENAGER MOODS CUZ YOUR STILL A TEENAGER!

A GANG? COME ON GROW UP YOU CHILD
Reply:first of all, GO AND TALK TO YOUR GP.

if you feel that this is really affecting you, you need to seek advice.

sounds to me though that your just getting worked up by what is LIFE

you have no control over any of the events you mention, if you can't control it then you have to accept it. concentrate more on changing the things that you do have control over but don't like.

good luck hope everything works out for you

ps don't be embarrassed about talking to a doctor about your mental health - he WILL have heard it before
Reply:I really think it's time you left the gang. Maybe you're just ready to move on. Whatever it is i think you may need to talk to someone who know's how to deal with your anxiety. Sort it out my friend, (from the mom of a 17 year old) x
Reply:just a guess. have you been or ever been on any type of drug? type in your questions using the word anxiety. you will get a host of good answers. you will see all of your symptoms and find the answer that fits you. good luck!
Reply:i think its called being a teenager! things are hard at that age. give her a break. and the mood swings might just be pmt.
Reply:you should go to the dr it could be a number of things such as ocd depression etc.
Reply:Typical of depression/anxiety (BTW, millions of American suffer these to one degree or another, so you are not alone.)

You can best deal with these through therapy and medication. Either ask for a referral from your doctor, or seek the advice of your community social services agency. Most of the latter agencies have both excellent referrals and/or staff that can be obtained for a minimal cost. Good luck.
Reply:life
Reply:low self esteem
Reply:Hi shug you need to go and see a doctor and explain your feelings. I think there is also an element of jealousy in your life and you don't like change. So make that appointment to see the doctor and don't 4get to let us all know how you go on cos we're thinking about you.. Have a nice week-end.
Reply:You need to change your mates. spread your wings a little.
Reply:I would say that this sounds like an unconscious anxiety associated with a past event. Can you think of any past situation that may be similar in any way to your present situation?

The anxiety is caused by the irrational perception of this situation turning out like another one you have previous experienced. The itching is a mystery to me however many over the counter pain killers contain codeine these days and can cause itching. My anxiety causes an unpleasant tingling beneath my skin on my arms and hands. Is this similar? Is the talking to yourself generally involving self criticising and justification. If so its just your totally normal inner critic. my neighbours must think I have a serious psychotic disorder due to my constant prattling and waffling.

There is a chance that you cannot remember the root cause of this however your unconscious mind remembers everything and these unknown thoughts and long past experiences still continue to affect our reasoning, motives and behaviour.
Reply:make an appointment to see your doctor
Reply:your not passed the hormone part of your life yet and its nothing more than be a little unsure of yourself ,we all think and talk to ourselves how could you not talk to yourself is that not part of the thinking process .
Reply:It seems you are depress because no one is pay attention with you, Go out and make new friends.
Reply:Human?

The itching skin though, I'd wonder if you're using cocaine or some kind of amphetamine, that would also explain your other symptoms.

EDIT: At 17 you're not past the teenage hormones. You're just getting started kid. 17 is the climax especially since you'll be 18 soon and expected to be an adult. Puberty doesn't end until you're in your early twenties.
Reply:Go to your doctor and get checked for OCD and if you are bipolar
Reply:doctors now not later!!!!
Reply:Sounds like hormones and being a teenager. I would try talking with someone about the resentment. Holding resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. It is not good for your health.

This gang that you hang out with, is it a good gang? Can you talk to these friends? Are you afraid to open up with them? Is there someone you can trust?
Reply:You should ask your doctor to have you tested for Bi polar disorder. Many of the above symptoms describe what many people also have that have Bipolar disorder, read all you can on it and ask your doctor for the test and help. If you do have this there are many medications that can help , good luck

Funny scenario (for my biblicaly literate people)?

I just though of a funny scenario,

imagine for a minute after all of God's children are in heaven and we're all seeing the familiar faces of friends and family members. Everyone looks at him wishing they had the "old charriot pick-up" on their last day.

Funny scenario (for my biblicaly literate people)?
Haha he had a limo service from heaven...
Reply:Oh it wasn't a question - he just wanted to share some of his musings with people who might understand.
Reply:Wow that really is verrrrry fu..... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

*yawn*
Reply:Did you ask a question and I missed it?
Reply:That is kind of funny. I suppose Enoch would be in a similar position-I guess he and Elijah would be on one side and everyone else on the other.

Just kidding, I know there would be no 'divisions' in heaven but still a funny thought.
Reply:Imagine talking to Paul, James, or some missionary who suffered a horrible torturous death because they would not renounce the name of Christ. How small is that going to make you feel.
Reply:that is funny
Reply:no jealousy in heaven ---
Reply:If the question was "is that scenario funny?" ... I'd have to say only marginally. I get the joke, but it's no really "ha-ha" funny ... more, "oh I see, yeah" funny.
Reply:the Bible tells about 2 prophets that will appear in the tribulation to preach the gospel, and will die, the whole world will see them.. and even throw a party because they are gone.. then on the 3rd day they will arise.. many people believe that one of those prophets will be Elijah, because he never died.. sounds reasonable.. doesn't it?

if so, then his day of death is coming.
Reply:what is funny about that?

what is the purpose of your life ?
Reply:Very funny.
Reply:Whats your point? This is funny how?
Reply:Well, there's going to be alot that met Jesus in the air !
